Bridgehampton – Opening Day of the Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge at Blue Star Jets Field is scheduled for Saturday, July 24.

Polo matches return to Bridgehampton this summer with six weeks of the most exciting and memorable action in the world. The sport’s greatest athletes will compete for polo’s most treasured prizes – the Mercedes-Benz Cup and the Hamptons Cup. As in years past, the East End’s most famous polo tournament will be witnessed by both noteworthy VIP’s and celebrated personalities.

Season partners include: Mercedes-Benz, Blue Star Jets, SWAGG, Blue Star Jets, Ralph Lauren, Patron, La Societe Stella Artois, Smart Water, Pop Chips, Coca-Cola, Bertaud Belieu Wines, Jarlsberg® cheese, Zino Platinum Cigars, Crumbs Cupcakes and Bakery, Financial Times, Susan Foster Jewelry and Hamptons Magazine.

SWAGG, a mobile application to be released during the 2010 holiday season, will allow consumers to purchase, exchange and redeem gift cards from their phone. SWAGG will celebrate the Mercedes-Benz Bridgehampton Polo Challenge by creating the SWAGG Lounge. Guests will have the opportunity to preview the highly anticipated SWAGG application while mixing it up with friends in a custom-tented environment, complete with their own bar and an array of celebrity DJ’s all summer.

Polo Ralph Lauren will return this summer as the exclusive apparel retailer with an on site shop at the Bridgehampton Polo matches. Evocative of the spirit and heritage of Polo, the shop will feature Ralph Lauren’s Black Watch collection and The World of Polo Fragrance. Spectators visiting the Ralph Lauren shop will also have a great view of each match while entering to win a Polo lesson with Black Watch team member Nacho Figueras. Polo Ralph Lauren became an official sponsor of the Black Watch Polo team in 2007, providing apparel created exclusively for team players.

Headed by event organizers, Strategic Group, the season will commence on Saturday, July 24, 2010 and will continue for six consecutive Saturdays, ending August 28.

A portion of proceeds from the Mercedes-Benz Bridgehampton Polo Challenge will go to South Fork Breast Cancer Coalition. The VIP tent will host an invitation-only cocktail reception for exclusive guests each Saturday afternoon during the tournament.

Matches will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Millions of airline passengers are still stranded, delayed or hugely inconvenienced by the disruption to commercial aviation caused by the volcanic ash coming from Iceland that covered much of Western and eastern Europe over the last few days. The airlines themselves suffered hundreds of millions of financial damage with the full effects unknown for months to come, as they scramble to get back to normal schedules.

Right now there is a backlog of days, for some airlines as long as a week, before all stranded passengers could be delivered to their original destinations. What is the impact of that overload on passengers trying to book a flight for the coming days? Its all a huge puzzle unlike anything seen ever before on such a huge scale.

The problem is further compounded by the fact that aircraft are also stranded at airports, and need to be repositioned before they can start flying their scheduled routes. Air space from Britain to Ukraine was closed and likely to stay that way until next week in many countries, affecting airports worldwide. Millions of passengers have been stranded, especially in Europe.

Activity in the volcano shows no sign of abating.

“There doesn’t seem to be an end in sight,” Icelandic geologist Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson told The Associated Press on Saturday. “The activity has been quite vigorous overnight, causing eruptions to grow.”

Travelers stranded in Europe who must proceed on their intended itinerary and unable to do so by commercial air travel, have the option to charter a private flight to get back to their planned destinations.
